All Other Information: (Update) We have no info on birth parents. Joshua Morgan we believe that he might have had red hair ?. Joshua Morgan was born in Hickman County, Tennessee on 1-1-1818. We think his father died about ?-?-1826 ? or thereabouts, which would have made Joshua around 8 years old. Hickman County, Tennessee's courthouse was burned in ?-?-1866 (Civil War) I think. Court records were destroyed. In the "goode olde' days" sometimes the adoptive family just took the child home with them. We believe that Joshua's birth father was named John Morgan, and the adoptive family was the James Lewis family. All this taking place in Hickman County, Tennessee. We think the Lewis family moved to Missouri by 1830. Haven't checked their census for Missouri, but did check Tennessee's, and by 1830 they are gone from Tennessee.

All Other Information: This surname at that time was spelled several ways. Shinpaugh, Shinpock, Shinpaw. Elizabeth McDaniel Shinpaugh adopted a boy, William Shinpaugh, in ?-?-1818. This was 4 years after her husband, Henry Shinpaugh had died. So we don't know if she was the birth Mother or not. Our records simply say that she "acquired" a baby boy that she named William Shinpaugh. I am descended from him. Death records from 1818 in Roane County might be helpful; maybe the baby was "acquired" because of death. William Shinpaugh (the adoptee) was buried at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. He died in 1903.

Unaka Color - white Age at Last Birthday - 39 Occupation - Advertizer (line 14) lines 15, 16 and 17 are not filled in they ask for Industry, date last engaged in this work, Total time spent in this work. Mother - Florence M Dumble Residence - 219 Unaka Color - white Age at last birthday - 27 Occupation - Housewife I still have not received anything from Catholic Social Services about Mom's records there. Both my sister and myself have a rare congenital, inherited pulmonary (lung) disorder called Bullous Emphysema. It does not run on my father's side of the family. My Mother was told the entire time that she was at St. Mary's Home here in Mobile that something horrible had happened and that is how she came to live there. The Nuns also told her that it would be in her best interest never to look for her birth family. As far as I know she never did. My parents always assumed that she was born to a young unwed mother or some other harmless circumstance and were very involved with raising their own family and living their own lives. My father died 3-14-1991. At that time I had to get birth verification for my Mother to receive his RR Retirement. I kept those papers and that is where I started this search. My Mother was diagnosed with Altzheimer's Disease in ?-?-1996 and died 6-25-2005. I was her caretaker and watched this amazing woman regress to the point of childhood. I would watch her many times and wonder what she was like as a child. I "played" with my mother and listened as she made up wonderful stories.During this time I won dered what she was really like as a child. I have no pictures of her or any history except for what she shared with us about her life in the orphanage. She went into a catatonic state for 1 1/2 years in the last part of her illness during which time she never spoke a word. She was hospitalized for a serious urinary tract infection and I stayed with her while she was in the hospital. She started babbling an unitelligible banter but her facial expression would change and the inflection in her voice would change. She would pause as if listening to some unseen guest and then she would babble again. Sometimes she would have a question to the quality of her speech and sometimes she would giggle. Sometimes she would motion with her hands and sometimes she would cry. I could not believe what I was seeing. I was told to call my family and so I did. My sister flew in from Jacksonville, FL. However the 2 days later Mom was released from the hospital. Her "delusions" continued however and my sister and I were in the room with her when the "conversation" started again. At this point I asked my Mother if she were talking to someone and this little contracted woman who had been catatonic for almost 18 months looked me dead in the eye and said, "Well, yes", as if I were an idiot for not knowing. I then asked her who it was and she responded "My Mother". There are many more details to this story but this is what planted the seed from which my quest grew. When my Mother passed I was determined to find out how she came to be in an orphanage in Mobile, AL when she was born in Tennessee. It seemed unlikely that a 3 year old child would be placed so far from family and never adopted to any one else. Here is what we know so far: Florence D Wells was 27 years old, married to William C Wells and on the 1930 census was shown to be living in Shelby County Tennesse with a 14 year old stepson from a previous marriage of William C Wells'. William C Wells was born in 7-?-1891. His father was from somewhere in AL. Florenence Dumble Wells was born in about ?-?-1903 and was the only child of Fred M Dumble and Mary Dumble. The stepson was born 2-25-1916. Fred M Dumbleand died 12-29-2005 in Pinellas County FL. I am in the process of contacting Pinellas Geneology society to have research done on my Mother's 1/2 brother. Catholic Social Services has still not contacted me with any information.

What we do know is that her adoptive parents raised her in Madison, TN. She attended an all girls Catholic school & was raised in a Roman Catholic church. This leads us to believe that it may have been a Catholic agency that handled the adoption. My mother was 2-3 months old when she was adopted by her adoptive parents. So that would have been 1-?-1951 or 2-?-1951. My grandfather, Hugh Martin is deceased. He passed 4-6-2007. He did serve in the US Air Force. This is all the information that we have at this time. She did not give her current or adoptive name. There was also a local cert. # listed of 141-54-87265,- not sure what that means. She listed that she was taken home from the hospital by her adoptive parents at 3 or 4 days old and adoption was arranged by an attorney. I found out that her name may be Linda Bearden Barnett.
