He used his birth name of Wyckoff when enlisting, and the discharge record states he was born on the 9-8-1885 in Syracuse, NY. although at enlistment in the Marines, he had been "adopted" by Augustus Gundlach and Marcia Carpenter (Gundlach) at some point prior to enlisting. I suspect that Eugene's parents died when he was young, but perhaps not so young, nor under circumstances sometimes associated to being adopted, because Eugene did know his birth surname and used it (as detailed above). However, for his adult life he went by Eugene Wyckoff Gundlach. His "adopting father" Augustus Gundlach and spouse Marcia lived in Oswego, NY on Rural Route 5. They had a farm. Other research I have done indicate that Eugene had a sibling (a brother)who was a professor in New York, but I have no true substantiation or record of that, nor do I have a name. I thought my Eugene may have come out of Anson Wyckoff and Ann Shoemaker, but I just can't find enough data to successfully tie into that data. I am an Ancestry user (jewellra1 is my user name) and I have posted a lot of information about Eugene on my Jewell Family Tree. I have also tried NY Geneaology service some years back, paying the state of NY to look for a birth recored for Eugene Wyckoff, however they had no success. Eugene died in the flu epidemic. Date of death is not certain, but research puts it around 1919. Presumably in Oswego, but could have been elsewhere, presumably New York, as he married in 1914 in New York (Pauline Jane Carpenter) with whome he had two children (Ralph and Pauline Gundlach. my father and his sister. All four children were baptized in Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington, NY. When their mother died on 3-18-1896, their father was unable to care for them. My grandmother's three siblings were placed with the Sisters of Mercy in Tarrytown, NY on 4-20-1896. My grandmother was sent to the New York Foundling Hospital in NYC on 6-2-1896, from which she was subsequently adopted. She never saw her father or siblings again. I know that her sister and paternal aunt (Mary Blake Spohn) tried to find my grandmother - I have a copy of a letter from Mrs. Spohn addressed to the NY Foundling demanding to know the whereabouts of my grandmother. Apparently, they were unsuccessful in obtaining the information. My grandmother's children never even knew she was adopted until after her death in 1962. I would dearly love to find out what happened to my grandmother's father and siblings and determine if any of them have any living descendents. I recently found out that Edward Joseph Blake married Marguerite May Biehl on 7-12-1924 in Rockland County, NY, but died on 7-21-1934 in Spring Valley, NY (Rockland County) before they ever had any children. I have been unable to locate my grandmother's other brother, Thomas, or her sister, Anna, past the 1910 census and do not know what became of their father after the children were placed in the two orphanages.
