All Other Information: Bessie Shreves was a second mother to me and my sister. She helped my mother and father in exchange for living with us. Mother always said she was related to us. She is gone to heaven now, but we loved her very much. She worked as a servant to another of our ancestors, Benjamin Brinton from Iowa, in the 1925 Iowa census. In the Iowa 1905 Census directory, she is listed as at same address as Dorcus Shreves, widow of Jonathan Shreves, also of Iowa. In this directory, the lived at Brighton, Iowa. My home town. I have found that Jonathan and Dorcus adopted a daughter, Annice Lind. With Bessie's father's last name being Lind, I am trying to find if Bessie might be Annice's birth sister and if Dorcus and Jonathan adopted her also because as a child, I only knew her last name to be Shreves. Sometimes spelled Shreeves. some of this information I gathered from different Iowa census. I also know that she lived in Answorth, Iowa as a servant to a man named Cady.Bessie never married. This I was told by my mother. Mom died in 2002 and my father has alzimers and only 1 uncle and 1 aunt left, with no more info. I loved this woman and want her to be more than a servant in my geneology reserch results. She needs her rightful place listed in the family history pages. please help me. thank Bessie died 3-15-1967 at the age of 90. She died in Washington, Iowa USA. Buried at the Brighton, Iowa, Hillcrest cemetary. Her tombstone lies close to Jonathan and Dorcus Stones. Jonathan was a civil war union soldier 1898-1925. (Update) Bessie Shreves had blue eyes and ? hair, but when I knew her, it was pure white, not a yellow white. Bessie was 4'.9" tall. Don't know anything about birth parents. I want to frnd out more about her birth father, where she was born, if she had more birth siblings, adoped date.doing geneology research and I feel this is important. can't seem to get anywhere, Please help.

All Other Information: I am the daughter of Hazel Elaine Potter. We believe my mother's biological father was Dr. Lynn Meyers, although, this was not stated in the adoption records. Ingalls Swisher, Mayor of Iowa City, signed the adoption record and it was notarized on 4-21-1921 by Anna F. Gardon, in Iowa City. No birth certificate because of a fire at the hospital in ?-?-1926. Dr. Lynn Meyers was the Doctor in the Sheldon, IA (O'Brien County) area where my mother grew up and many folks, including her adoptive parents believed that Dr. Meyers was her biological father. The adoption papers were notarized in O'Brien County on 4-26-1921. My mother graduated from Sheldon High School in ?-?-1938, and Dr. Meyers children also attended Sheldon High School. All Other Information: FYI: My adoptive dad was Clerk of the Lee Co Circuit Court in the mid 1950's, based in Ft Madison where his office was. Judge Leary was a friend of his and may have assisted in arranging my adoption. I believe my birth father's first name was Harold and may have owned the Dairy Creme in Keokuk at the time? My birth mother I believe was from MO, which is just over the MS River there in Keokuk. I believe they are both deceased perhaps in the past 10-15 years. I have been told I have siblings in Keokuk. The half sister Abbey, owns a beauty shop there and her husband Lenny Etter is a retired Keokuk, Iowa Police officer and as such has access to information. At the time they were searching for Craig, they did a little research on me. Another half sister told me this evening that my birth fathers name is Charles Stevens. He is deceased and passed away prob 10 yearrs ago at perhaps age 80. His wife (not my birth mother) passed within the past 2-3 years. This information was given to me by Audrey Shaffer of Keokuk, Iowa who worked at the Hennegiges Plant in Keokuk, Iowa with Linda Stevens, Charles daughter in law. Her husband Charles natural son is named Mark Stevens and is perhaps early 50's. He has older brothers I was told. I saw an obit online of a Pauline Stevens with a death of 2008 but the children names did not match. I was told my birth mother was from Winchester, Il but I was born as stated in Keokuk, Iowa. Abbey Etter (see above) told me some time ago that my birth mother died of alcoholism which whether true or not, leads me to believe my birth mother. lived in the community. She would have to for them to have that information.

All Other Information: Found birth mother who graduated from Spearfish, SD high school approximately ?-?-1949. Went by name of Ann Schmidt (I think) She is now deceased. (Update) I believe I was adopted from the Florence Crittendon Agency in Sioux City, Iowa. My birth mother (deceased) said that the birth father was in the military and stationed in Spearfish, S.D. when she got intoxicated and pregnant. She was engaged to another man at the time, so she left Spearfish, S.D. and went to stay with a relative in Sioux City until after my birth. I do not know if the info about birth father is correct - just the story she told me. She was born with the last name Markhardt from Mitchell, S.D., however she was raised by relatives in Spearfish, S.D. with the last name Schmidt and she took the Schmidt name and had no relationship with the Markhardts. My maternal grandmother died in childbirth with my birth mother, so my birth mother was "taken" away and raised by her mother's sister (Schmidt's). She also said that she never told anyone she was pregnant - especially the birth father. (Update) My hair is blonde and I have hazel eyes. I believe my birth mother was 18 years old when she gave birth to me and I do not have an age for the birth father since I do not have a copy of the original birth certificate - only the amended one which shows my adoptive parents as the partents.

All Other Information: (Update) I have always been told, by my adoptive family, that I was taken home from the hospital at 3 days old. My actual paperwork adoption went through Polk County District Court, Des Moines, Iowa when I was one year old. In 6-?-1953. I believe. I have always been told the story...that my birth mother was a student at Drake University (which is in Des Moines) and that she was from California. She was 18 years old when she gave birth to me (At least this is what I was always told) I was told that my birth father was a Des Moines Police Officer...who was married. My adoptive mother always told me the story about the time my birth mother was 8 months pregnant with me and she wanted to go home to California and see her family before I was born. Her attending physician...and my adoptive parents' physician...was Dr.Robert Gerald Hatchitt, D.O.....whom I was named after. He tried to talk her out of it. Telling her that if she delivered out there in California that whoever the attending physician is....that he would have the right to be able to adopt me out to any one of his patients that he has that are waiting to adopt. She was determined and went anyway. Long story short...she made it back to Des Moines, IA and I was born there on 7-3-1952. When I turned 18 years old I had a close friend who was attending Drake University. We went to their library and searched and searched. Could not find a hint of any Dorothy Opal Blake. We even went to the Des Moines Police Department and looked through all the pictures they had lining their walls of all officers every one on the police force. Our thinking was maybe we could find someone who I looked like. Strike 2. No luck there either. Every time I see or hear anything that's linked to California I feel a pang. I do truly believe the part about my birth mother being from California...because for some unknown reason I have always felt like I belonged there. (And yes I have been there) :-). One time I found a piece of paper in a chest of drawers at my home. I was probably approx 12 years old at the time. On it...in my fathers distinctive handwriting, was this. Roberta's birth mothers Information. Maiden name: Blake, Background: English-Irish, height 5'6'' tall, weight: 125 lbs, hair: auburn. Ever since that day I have always felt that I looked just like her. I've never seen her...but in my youth that description could have been used to describe me.

All Other Information: My mother & I are looking for 2 daughters she had to put up for adoption by her parents one was born 9-?-1957 she thinks. She was so young & hurt, sadden, that she does not remember the exact date & only knew they where girls did not get to see them or anything. Birth father's father in his 50's German 5'10" weighing 160 husky build gray eyes and light brown graying hair.Wore glasses, His parents were living nothing more known of them.Nothig known of Birth father father's siblings other than they farmed. Birth father's mother in her 40's thought to be German 5'5" weighing 140 blue eyes brown hair she wore glasses. a housewife with a high school education Her health good but had some back trouble. Her parents were deceased cause unknown. Birth father siblings healthy and had high school educations. Birth Parents had been together 2 years she choose not to marry or to tell him of her pregnancy she planned to continue their relationship.
